BIXI vs. Segway Ontario Bike Rentals

The Right Rental at the Right Price
A comparison between BIXI and Segway Bike Rentals

Our CFO, attractive or most attractive person in this photo?

I was on Toronto Island last week, one of our truly underutilized local gems in Toronto – a veritable paradise mere kilometres from the Bay Street money machine.  Our mechanic Josh and I decided to take a ride around with some friends and hopefully rid ourselves of the malady known as the farmer’s tan.  It was great, our mission might not have been successful in the fact that our arms and legs are still two-toned, but we had a great time.  One thing I saw over there was quite worrisome was the sheer amount of BIXI bikes crossing on the ferry.  It wasn’t a busy day by any mean but we must have seen 20 BIXI bikes on the ferry ride over – 20 people that I could only assume would wake up the next day with a larger charge on their credit card than expected.

We started talking about seeing so many bikes on the ferry as we had looked up costs associated with longer term BIXI rentals.  If these people were spending even 4 hours away from a BIXI stand they were going to be charged 50 bucks by the end of their trip.  We tried to tell a couple people this but public perception sure seems to be quite a bit different from reality, tourists and casual riders are often hit with a pricing structure they often don’t understand and is not explained clearly on BIXI stands.

That’s why we’ve decided to inform visitors and residents of Toronto about the real cost of renting a BIXI bike.  They ARE great for short-term rentals but after the first 1 ½ hours the costs skyrocket incredibly fast.  As detailed below, we compared our own rental prices to BIXI prices for equal amounts of time, accessories provided and sizing.

We’ve created this handy chart for visitors and locals to ensure everyone spends the right amount on a rental.  Going for an hour or less and want an easy way to travel?  Go with BIXI.  Are you looking at more than an hour and want a comfortable KHS Hybrid bike with a lock, helmet and map? Come visit us.

Some people that saw this infograph claimed we went too far.  I think we didn’t go too far enough, so we decided to put a massive sign in our window.

Let the era of appropriately priced bike rentals begin!

The mighty Pavel may have been overwhelmed by the awesomeness of our swag.

Hello Facebook friends, it’s your pals from Segway Ontario here. We are constantly asked a number of questions throughout the day, ‘how far does the Segway travel?’, ‘How old is the Distillery district?’, and our favourite question, ‘What do you guys do with your time when you’re not on tour?’.

If you’d like to learn the answer to the first two questions you’ll just have to join us on a tour. However, we’re going to answer that third question for you today. When we’re not giving ‘pretty much the best tours in the country©’ we are usually busy in the chemistry lab creating hair-growth tonics and off-brand Viagra replacements. Sometimes though, we actually do some real work, hence why you are reading this today.

We’ve put together an amazing prize-pack for one lucky person in our Great Facebook Photo Funtest including but not limited to:

Segway of Ontario Videoblog: Why We Love Mill Street Brewery

Hi there,

This is Chris and Aaron from Segway of Ontario, your Fun Officers.  In an effort to give you the most educationally fun experience around, we’re going to take you around the Distillery District through our videoblogs and highlight some of the businesses we deal with on a regular basis.

Today we’re going to take you to probably our favourite business on-site, Mill Street Brewery.  Started in 2002 as an alternative to bad beer, Mill Street has managed to win the Canadian Brewing Awards Best Brewery designation 3 years in a row between 2o07-2009.  They kicked things off with their wildly popular Organic Lager and since then have added about 25 new beers to the mix.

The brew-pub attached to the brewery is one of the best places to eat and drink east of Yonge St., and with 14 beers rotating on tap including multiple seasonals, this  brew-pub truly rewards repeat visitors. Apart from their beer-related excellence, we love Mill St. Brewery because of its fun atmosphere and friendly staff. You can literally watch the staff brew beer as you eat, or choose to watch awesome sports on one of their multiple flat screens…unless you’re there between 1-5 in the afternoon, poker and bowling are not awesome sports.  Come on Mill Street!

No matter what we think of their boring afternoon sports, we still love their beer and food, so here’s a video with even more detail:

If this seems like a paid advertisement, it should, we are very good at would we do. But all levity aside, we are not paid by Mill St. Brewery, we just love their products, and that love is unconditional. If you are reading this and own Mill St. Brewery please make us co-owners. Until next time;

Aaron & Chris

Cliff Related Apologies

Hi Everyone,

This is Aaron Binder, your Chief Fun Officer.

For a few weeks now we’ve had a sign on one of our Segways that brought light to a very unfortunate accident.  While most people found this particular sign humourous and were actually open to discussing the events that brought it around, others misunderstood the intention and found it offensive.  The reason we created the sign in the first place was to stop passers-by from interrupting our tours every 3 minutes; it was not a marketing campaign, it was not done in poor taste or judgement and we are glad that we made some new friends because of it.

So for anyone that may have been offended, this video is for you:

We’re always looking to open up conversation about our business and everything Segway related, so hopefully you like our new sign and will continue to enjoy the other new ones we have coming your way.

Talk to you soon,

Aaron Binder

Segway of Ontario

It’s us, Segway of Ontario

Hey,

It’s Aaron and Chris from Segway of Ontario and we’re always looking for cheap and awesome things to do in Toronto.  Sometimes we’ll wander around the city with 25 bucks each in our pockets wondering just what we can do with that.  Well, it doesn’t really help our problem, but if you’ve been in that same wandering with 25 dollars problem before, we can help relieve you of those extra cash-dollars.

Between today and December 16th, if you join our Facebook page, we’re offering you and a friend the Segway deal of a lifetime.  If you book a tour for Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday between 4 and 7 pm, we’ll hook both of you up on our 30 minute Segway Spins for just 50 bucks.  That’s probably over 40% off according to the confusing calculations I just did in my head!

What we’re saying is that this is a great idea for a date, to reconnect with your high school bff, your old jail cellmate or even your estranged Romanian god-parents.  So bring down your 25 bucks and a friend with 25 bucks and we’ll hook you up with the best tour of the Distillery District that you’ll ever go on!

The hard facts:

Who: Segway of Ontario…you…and a friend?

Where: The Distillery District

Why: We’re really cool and nice

How much: 39 or two for 50!

How do I book: Click here to Join our Facebook page to find a booking code, call us or email us to book your tour!

When: Tuesday-Thursdays until December 16th, between 4-7 pm

For some people it is difficult being this awesome all the time. We were born with it.
